The Tribal Liaison Program

Since 1998, the Census Bureau has begun coordinating with tribes to enable the process of organizing data collection for Census 2001. One of these efforts has been the establishment of a Tribal Liaison Program. The Tribal Liaison Program provides direct link from the Census Bureau, an agency of the Federal Government, to the Tribal Government. It recognizes the Government to Government Policy issued by President Clinton in 1994.

The Tribes have appointed a tribal person whose function is to be the main contact point for all programs that relate to Census 2001. This included updating maps of tribal trust lands for data purposes, assisting the Census Bureau in organizing geographical areas for statistical purposes, keeping tribal governments informed of the overall process. Tribal Liaisons have coordinated efforts by meeting on a periodic basis and discussing issues and having input into programs that affect their tribes.
