Position Summary:

Under general direction of the Education Director and the Program Manager; the teacher teaches, organizes and implements a Keres language educational curriculum for adults and youth of the Santa Ana Pueblo. **NOTE: Job announcement will initially be opened to Pueblo members for five (5) working days.** This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • •Instructs Santa Ana youth and adults in the language of Santa Ana Keres.
  • •Participates in training Native American teachers in the Keres language.
  • •Organizes, plans and implements the teaching of the Keres language
  • •Works with the Head Start teacher in the planning, organization and implementation of activities and lessons in the Keres language for youth and adults in the community and for the Summer Language program.
  • •Participates in field trips to promote the Keres language.
  • •Assists with the planning of the monthly community language forums.
  • •Maintains professional and technical knowledge by conducting research; attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
  • •Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
  • •Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in education plus three year's work experience in teaching the Keres language is required; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be certified in the Keres language, and must successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation, including a motor vehicle check. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license and be insurable under the Pueblo's insurance.

  • •Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • •Knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of Santa Ana traditions, language, history, and culture.
  • •Knowledge and understanding of adult and youth learning principles, and of a wide range of training methods, techniques, and formats.
  • •Knowledge of curriculum development and preparation procedures.
  • •Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows environment.
  • •Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • •Ability to design, develop, implement, and evaluate training plans, curricula, and methodology.
  • •Ability to interact well with individuals from a wide range of ages and skill levels.
  • •Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • •Ability to interpret applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • •Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • •Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • •Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee occasionally is required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:

Work is generally performed in a classroom setting with moderate to loud noise levels and where employee may be exposed to unpleasant odors, hazardous material and infectious disease. There is frequent interaction with children, school staff, the public and Pueblo of Santa Ana employees.
